During the one-month filmmaking workshop, five films with an average duration of 5 minutes were screened. The training, titled ‘Women Make Films’, was also supported by Oscar International College and the Film Development Board.
It has been remarked that portrayal of women in Nepali films is unnatural and status quoist. According to the organizer Kipalaya, the workshop was held to break many stereotypes about women and increase the number of women in film production.
Kipalaya’s project chief Aashma Pokharel said that applications were invited from all over the country for the workshop and 10 people were selected from the applicants. Initially, the workshop was physically planned to be held in two places, Kathmandu and Chitlang, but it was virtually completed in the second wave of the epidemic.
Nav Vijay Shrestha, project coordinator of the workshop, said that they tried to initiate the girl in filmmaking using both theoretical and practical methods. ‘In a month-long training, 18- to 24-year-olds learned the art of asking constructive questions about the fabric of Nepali society. We feel that the screening of these five films has provided a good platform for these women filmmakers to show their abilities and make them confident, ”said Nav Vijay.
Plan Nepal’s campaign expert Srijana Bajracharya said that she was happy that the teenagers were able to make an excellent film in such a short time. “I never thought it would be so good with such a short training, but they have made a great film,” she said.
The one-month workshop was held from July 18 to August 19. The workshop was attended by Aashruti Tripathi, Pradhanya Yonjan, Angela Chaudhary, Pushpa Joshi, Purnima Maharjan, Ambika Bhandari, Asmita Lawati, Srisha Kunwar, Mira Khadka and Jyoti Belbase.
