KATHMANDU: SEPT. 10 – Tej Bahadur Chitrakar, 83, of Indrachowk is now busy painting the mask. He is painting the masks of Halchowk Bhairava and his companions Chandra Kumar and Chandra Kumari for the upcoming Indra Jatra.

Tej Bahadur started this ancestral profession at the age of 33. He says that after his father’s death, he started doing what his father had been doing. He says that such crowns are dyed using different natural colours.

Tej Bahadur not only paints the mask but also makes the mask. Such masks worn in various pilgrimages are dyed once a year and renewed in 12 years. Every year after the beginning of Indra Jatra, the dance of Halchowk Bhairava is performed for one week from Bhadra Shukla Dwadashi.
