KATHMANDU: SEPT. 10 – MCC Vice President Fatema Sumar has clarified that she did not come to Nepal to create pressure on MCC. Fatema, who met former Prime Minister and UCPN (Maoist) Central Committee Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ on Friday morning, said, ‘I have only come to understand about MCC. She is not here to create pressure or to exert pressure. ‘

Asked by Vice President Fatema if she had come to understand the MCC, Prachanda said, “For this, a national consensus must be reached between the parties represented in the parliament.” President Prachanda’s secretariat said, “He (Prachanda) told Vice President Fatema that their focus now is on strengthening the ruling coalition, which is the vehicle of progress.”

During the meeting, Vice President Fatema said that she was confident of positive results for MCC in Nepal. “I think there will be a positive decision on the MCC here,” Prachanda was quoted as saying by the secretariat. “I am optimistic.”

The delegation led by Vice President Fatema has already met UML Chairman and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN (Unified Socialist) Chairman and former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal. In a meeting with all the Oli, Fatema expressed the view that ‘what is happening in Nepal about MCC should not have happened and has been expressing confidence that other leaders will have a positive opinion about MCC in Nepal.

Nepal, which signed the MCC agreement in 2017, has not yet made a clear and concrete decision on it. While the main opposition UML, including the ruling Nepali Congress, is now trying to get a ‘version’, the other parties have almost the same view. Parties including the Maoist Center have taken a stand that the MCC should not be passed without amendment.
