ALGIER: SEPT. 3 – Algeria thrashed visiting Djibouti 8-0 in their opening Group A encounter on Thursday at Blida stadium in Africa’s second round of 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Islam Slimani was the star of the game, scoring a hat-trick.
The Olympic Lyonnais striker scored his 36 career goals for Algeria to tie Abdelhafid Tasfaout’s all-time record.
The visitors went down to 10 men in the 23rd minute when defender Batio Mohamed Youssouf was sent off.
Manchester City forward Riyad Mahrez also marked his name on the scoring sheet as he netted once.
The other goals were scored by Ramy Bensebaini, Ramiz Zeroukki, and a penalty from Baghdad Bounedjah.
The Desert Foxes are unbeaten for a record 28 games in a row.
Algeria now travels to the Moroccan city of Marrakesh, where they face Burkina Faso on September 7.
