The Nepali youth team lost its chance to qualify for the World Cup
KATHMANDU: AUGUST 26 – The U-19 Asia cricket tournament scheduled for September has been cancelled due to COVID-19. With the cancellation of the competition, Nepal’s chances of being selected in the World Cup have ended.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to cancel the U-19 Asia, USA and EAPA qualifiers citing COVID-19. The last five World Cup qualifiers were based on the U-19 Asia selection. Where UAE managed to make a place in the World Cup.
Similarly, Papua New Guinea automatically qualified for the 2022 U-19 World Cup from Canada and EAPA in the US selection.
Nepal, UAE, Kuwait, Malaysia, Singapore and Oman were preparing to play for the selection. In the last five editions, UAE and Nepal have participated in the World Cup twice. The last time they defeated Nepal by one run, UAE became the champion and played in the World Cup.
In the U-19 World Cup Asia selection held in Malaysia in 2019, UAE was at the top with 10 points in 5 games and made it to the World Cup.
Nepal lost to UAE by one run on the basis of the Duckworth Lewis method due to rain. The loss of the same one run was decisive even in the 2022 World Cup.
