State 1: Rai is to resign, Acharya is to be Chief Minister
BIRATNAGAR: AUGUST 26 – State 1 Chief Minister Sherdhan Rai is set to resign today. Sources close to Rai said that he was about to resign after a meeting of the parliamentary parties.
Rai is about to resign to make Bhim Acharya, who left Madhav Kumar Nepal, the Chief Minister. For this, a meeting of the UML parliamentary party has been called for 11 am. A lawmaker said that Chief Minister Rai had resigned from the post of parliamentary party leader and was preparing to elect Bhim Acharya as the party leader. The same meeting is preparing to elect Bhim Acharya as the party leader.
As soon as Chief Minister Rai resigned from the party leadership, he will resign before state chief Somnath Adhikari Pyasi. After Acharya Oli joined the faction from the Nepal faction, UML chairperson KP Oli had promised to make him the chief minister. Acharya Rai, who was earlier defeated by a two-vote margin with Sherdhan Rai, is paving the way for him to become the Chief Minister again by becoming the leader of the parliamentary party.
UML has 51 MPs in State-1. Though the CPN-Socialist Party has been claiming that it has 11 candidates in its favor, a leader said that the possibility of Bhim Acharya becoming the Chief Minister is strong as the CPN-UML has the required number. “We have the required number,” he told Makalu Khabar. “There is no need to be afraid within the parliamentary party.”
In the state assembly, 47 MPs are needed to become the chief minister. There are 21 MPs from the Congress, 15 from the Maoists, 3 from the JSP, 1 each from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party and the Federal Democratic National Forum. Even if only eight MPs go to the Socialist Party, the UML government is sure to fall. UML leaders claim that the number is not in the socialists.
