KATHMANDU: AUGUST 23 – Lumbini Chief Minister Kul Prasad KC ‘Sonam’ is taking a vote of confidence. Nepali Congress Lumbini parliamentary party leader Birendra Kumar Kanodia said that Chief Minister KC would take a vote of confidence from today’s state assembly meeting. “He is taking a vote of confidence today,” Kanodia told Makalu Khabar. “The state assembly meeting has started. From here, he is taking a vote of confidence.”

Chief Minister KC needs the support of 41 lawmakers to prove that the state assembly has faith in him. The ruling party has 19 members from the Nepali Congress, 18 from the Maoist Center (excluding the Speaker), three from the JSP, one from the Rastriya Janamorcha and 42 from Independent MP Ajay Shahi. Opposition UML has 37 MPs.

KC Lumbini, the leader of the UCPN (Maoist) Central Parliamentary Party, was appointed as the Chief Minister on 11 August with the support of 42 MPs from four parties and one independent. As soon as KC was appointed as the Chief Minister, the opposition party UML had been obstructing the meeting of the State Assembly by pressuring for the resignation of Independent MP Ajay Shahi and Maoist Center Vimala Kumari Wali. However, Speaker Purna Bahadur Gharti has refused to dismiss both lawmakers as they are not from UML.

After that, UML had blocked the state assembly meeting held at 2 pm today. After that, Speaker Ghartimagar adjourned the meeting till 2:30 pm.
