KATHMANDU: AUGUST 23 – In the Nepali language, ‘Sa’ means cow and ‘Paru’ means pratipada date. Today, the Newar community celebrates Gai Jatra as ‘Saparu’, meaning the cow of Pratipada. Today, the Newar community across the country is celebrating Saparu or Gai Jatra.

Bipul Sangat, 8, of Jai Bageshwari in Kathmandu has been happy since this morning (Monday). Today, he is participating in the Gai Jatra of his grandmother Saparu, who passed away at the last festival. He is participating in today’s Gai Jatra with his father Binod Sangat. He is not only participating but also becoming the main character of the procession.

Bipul is being made Lord Krishna by his family in today’s Gai Jatra. Since morning, other members of the family have been busy decorating him so that he looks like Krishna. Bipul is also happy to be decorated. In another room, his father is being groomed as a cow. Along with the father and son, others from the neighbourhood are also participating in the Gai Jatra.
