Mobile app for access to emergency services for people with disabilities

KATHMANDU: AUGUST 21 – A mobile app called ‘Bachau’ has been launched targeting people with disabilities. The application, developed by the Incredible Foundation in collaboration with USAID’s Nepal Project, is targeted at the deaf and hard of hearing.
Emergency services will be provided to people with all types of disabilities. Through the app, deaf and hard of hearing people can inform the police, fire brigade or ambulance about their problems. While appealing for help through the application, the police will get information about the person who needs help or the location of the incident, so it is expected to be quick for facilitation.
Speaking on the occasion, Pallav Panta, Chairman of the Foundation, said that the rescue app was made public as a small effort in the absence of disability-friendly governmental and non-governmental bodies in Nepal. He said that the use of technology in disaster management would be fruitful not only for the disabled but also for all. He said that the technology is expected to make it easier for people with disabilities to avoid and reduce the risk of disasters. Chairman Panta said that there is a new approach in the field of disaster risk reduction including disability in Nepal.
Speaking on the occasion, Humkala Pandey, Chief of Disaster Management Division, Ministry of Home Affairs, said that the use of technology would be effective in assisting the people in distress.
The participants of the program said that since people with disabilities are not able to use technology, emphasis should be laid on the easy flow of information through the use of signs or pictures. They opined that the flow of information would be more effective if there was coordination among the emergency assistance agencies including Nepal Police, Ambulance and Fire Brigade.
They stressed the need to be aware of the need to provide assistance in case of disaster or any other problem by informing various agencies in case of emergency.
The foundation has stated that the app available in beta version will be refined and brought into full operation soon.
