PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI: AUGUST 15 – A magnitude 7.2 earthquake shook the Caribbean nation of Haiti on Saturday, killing at least 300 people. The epicenter was reported below the ground, however; no tsunami alert was issued. The 7.2-magnitude quake hit the west of the country on Saturday morning, toppling and damaging buildings including churches and hotels according to BBC.
The quake destroyed many homes, schools, churches, and hotels. Repeated aftershocks following a major earthquake have made rescue and relief difficult. The quake affected neighbouring Cuba and Jamaica. Haiti, where the president was assassinated just a few weeks ago, has been hit by another earthquake.
Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who inspected the quake’s epicenter, declared a month-long state of emergency. Eleven years ago (2010), a magnitude 7.0 earthquake shook the region and killed thousands.
