KATHMANDU: AUGUST 9 – The Tokyo Olympics have been successfully concluded amid the challenge of the coronavirus epidemic. The competition started on July 23 and lasted for 19 days. The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, announced the conclusion of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on Sunday.

Now the next Olympics will be in Paris in 2024.

At the Tokyo Olympics, 11,000 athletes from 206 countries competed in 339 events in 33 games. The players won 340 gold, 338 silver and 302 bronze medals.

This time, Bermuda, Qatar and the Philippines made history by winning gold at the Olympics for the first time. Burkina Faso, San Marino and Turkmenistan also won their first Olympic medals. San Marino has become the smallest country to win a medal.

The United States topped the list with 113 medals, including 39 gold, 41 silver and 33 bronze, while China came in second with 88 medals, including 38 gold, 32 silver and 18 bronze.

Hosts Japan also won the most gold medals in Olympic history. Japan finished third with a total of 58 medals, including 27 gold, 14 silver and 17 bronze. Great Britain was fourth with 65 medals, including 22 gold and 21 silver and 22 bronze, while the Russian Olympic Committee was fifth with 65 medals, including 20 gold and 21 silver and 22 bronze.

Australia finished sixth with 17 medals, including 17 gold, seven silver and 22 bronze, while the Netherlands, France and Germany bagged 10 gold medals each. A total of 65 nations won gold medals, 17 nations won silver and 10 nations won only bronze. A total of 92 nations returned home with medals, while 113 nations remained without medals.

Apart from India, no other country in South Asia has won a medal. India had won a total of seven medals, including one gold. Five players from Nepal participated. In which three players had set national records.

The closing ceremony began with fireworks. After that, the flag of the host Japan and the flags of all the countries were displayed in a round shape on the ground. Then slowly the players came on the field. Which looked attractive.

At the closing ceremony, Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike and IOC President Thomas Bach handed over the Olympic flag to Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo.
