BIRATNAGAR: AUGUST 7 – Biratnagar Metropolitan City has developed a new basic level curriculum for the first time. A new curriculum has been introduced for the students of the municipality covering local geography, language, festivals and culture.

Mayor of Biratnagar Metropolitan City Bhim Parajuli and Deputy Mayor Indira Karki have made public the local curriculum from class 1 to class 5. The Biratnagar Metropolitan City has stated that geographical, historical, religious and cultural subjects have been included in the curriculum targeting the students studying within Biratnagar.

Mayor of the Biratnagar Metropolitan City, Bhim Parajuli, said that the curriculum was designed to cover such places without the knowledge of the students about the many places of historical, archaeological, social and cultural significance within Biratnagar. Stating that students do not develop creativity due to lack of knowledge about locality, it is our belief that students should be imparted knowledge on local geography to costumes from an early age. Mayor Parajuli said,

As per the provision in the National Curriculum Draft 2075, the local level can create and implement 100 integers local curriculum in the school level curriculum. Based on that, the Educational Administration Division of Biratnagar Metropolitan City has created ‘Our Biratnagar’ local curriculum for classes 1 to 5. This course has been made compulsory in all private and community schools of the Biratnagar region from the academic session 2078 BS. Based on this curriculum, textbooks on local subjects will be published in Nepali and local languages, said Durga Prasad Khatiwada, Chief of Education Division.

A local curriculum development committee was formed under the coordination of Professor Dr Anil Pokhrel. The committee has given priority to local subjects from the curriculum prepared after a long time. On behalf of the institutional schools, Rajan Chharahang, Secretary of the Teachers Federation Dek Bahadur Bastola, President of the Nepal Teachers Association Shivaraj Koirala, Ward Chairman of Biratnagar 11 Tithendra Neupane, Coordinator of the Curriculum Development Committee Anil Pokhrel and others said that the students would gain knowledge about localism through curriculum development.
