Messi leaving Barcelona after 21 years
KATHMANDU: AUGUST 6 – Spanish club Barcelona captain Lionel Messi is set to leave Barcelona after two decades. Barcelona said on Thursday that their contract with Argentine star Messi had not been renewed. Messi is about to leave Barcelona after 21 years.
Messi, 34, who has been with Barcelona since 2000, made his senior debut for Barcelona in 2004. Messi, who has won all kinds of titles for Barcelona, has set one record after another at the club. He has scored 672 goals in 778 games.
The club said the agreement could be renewed due to legal issues with the financial structure. Earlier, it was rumoured that Messi would sign a five-year deal with Barcelona.
Messi has won four La Liga titles and four Champions League titles with Barcelona. He also won the Copa del Rey seven times. Messi captained Argentina to the Copa America title last month.
Barcelona issued a statement on Thursday stating that their contract with Messi had not been renewed. Messi, who grew up at the Catalan club’s academy, will now move to another club on a free transfer.
Messi, a six-time Ballon d’Or winner, has been out of contract with the club since June 30. However, it is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.
