Melamchi floods have washed away 60 houses
SINDHUPALCHOWK: AUGUST 2 – The Melamchi River has flooded 60 houses since Saturday. According to Rajan Adhikari, Superintendent of Police at the District Police Office, 55 houses were flooded in Kiul, Chanaute, Gyalthum and other areas in Helambu and five in Talamarang and Melamchi.
According to him, the house was flooded last night due to the severe flood on June 15. Those houses were empty. Chanaute Gyalthum and Dhunger markets are at risk. The Dhunger bazar of Helambu Village Municipality-4 are also at risk, said police and army.
He urged all to remain vigilant as the risk remains. The flood is flowing through Chanaute Bazar. Earlier floods had also flowed from this market. Efforts were being made to save the market by returning the river to its old course. The floods have endangered the Mid-Hill Highway in Melamchi Municipality-12 and the only Bahunepati bridge connecting Melamchi, Indrawati, Chautara and Panchpokhari.
The Bahunepati market, which was saved from the floods on June 15, is now at risk. The floods have also washed away four cowsheds, a concrete bridge and a suspension bridge. The furniture industry and a radio building have also been swept away by the floods. The floods are estimated to have damaged two concrete bridges and two houses in Helambu. The condition of the concrete bridge over the Kattike river of Helambu-2 and the concrete bridge over the Ghatte river connecting wards 1 and 2 of Helambu is yet to be ascertained.
