San Marino become smallest nation to win medal
TOKYO: JULY 29 – With a population of only 34,000, San Marino has become the smallest country to win an Olympic medal. Alessandra Perilli won the bronze medal in the women’s trap shooting at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics 2020, becoming the smallest country in the world to win a medal at the San Marino Olympics.
So far, 59 nations have won medals at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics. The last medal-winning country is San Marino. Out of 59 countries, 31 have won gold. China topped the list with 14 gold, 6 silver and 9 bronze medals, followed by the United States with 13 gold, 14 silver and 10 bronze medals and Japan with 13 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze medals.
For San Marino, Perilli won her first medal on Thursday. She secured the medal by adding 29 scores. Earlier, she was fourth in the 2012 London Olympics but was deprived of a medal. She won a medal in Tokyo.
In Thursday’s competition, Australia’s Laetisha Scanlan missed the final shot and her medal was secured. In this competition, Slovakia’s Zuzana Rehak-Stefecekova won gold and the USA’s Kayle Browning won silver. San Marino has sent five athletes to the Olympics this time. Along with him, another male player has participated in the shooting and 1-1 in judo, wrestling and swimming.
Earlier on Wednesday, Flora Duffy won the gold medal in the triathlon, making Bermuda the smallest country to win gold in the Olympics. This record is held in the name of Bermuda.

However, San Marino broke the record of the smallest country to win a medal in the name of Bermuda with a population of 63,000. In 1976, Clarence Hill set the record by winning a bronze in boxing.
Duffy crossed the 51-kilometre triathlon to make Bermuda the smallest country to win a gold medal. At a total length of 40 kilometres, this distance is longer than reaching from one side to the other in Bermuda. With a population of over 163 million at the Olympics so far, Bangladesh is the largest nation without a medal. With six participants from Bangladesh this time, the challenge of three has ended.
