DAMASCUS: JULY 29 – Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said Wednesday that cooperation between Syria and Iran will continue until all areas of his country are liberated from the rebel fighters, according to the state news agency SANA.

The president made the remarks during talks with visiting speaker of Iran’s Islamic Shura Council, Mohammad Bagher Ghlibaf.

Assad stressed that Iran has been a key partner for Syria and has stood alongside the Syrian people in facing “terrorism.”

He pointed out that coordination in the fight against terrorist groups in Syria has yielded positive results, noting that it will continue until the “full liberation of territories and the defeat of terrorist organizations.”

For his part, Ghlibaf said that recent elections in Syria and Iran have illustrated the failure of Western pressure against both countries and prove that no one can stand against the people’s will, according to the report.

During the Syrian war, Iran has provided the Syrian government with significant support, including logistical, technical, and financial support, as well as training and the provision of combat troops.

Pro-Iran fighting groups are largely located in Aleppo province and the eastern province of Deir al-Zour close to the Iraqi border.

The United States and Israel have repeatedly struck Iranian targets on Syrian soil.
