KATHMANDU: JULY 28 – Today, World Hepatitis Day is being celebrated in Nepal by organizing various awareness programs. The ministry said there would be no physical program as the risk of corona infection remained.

The World Health Organization has set an international slogan, “Don’t wait for hepatitis.” In Nepal, it is being celebrated under the slogan ‘Hepatitis Eradication Basis, Public Awareness Prevention and Treatment’. There are five types of hepatitis A to E. Hepatitis B and hepatitis C are relatively more deadly.

Hepatitis B is estimated to be 0.9 per cent of the total population of Nepal in about 250,000 people and Hepatitis C in about 130,000 people. One person dies from hepatitis every second in the world. It is estimated that 1 million 40 thousand patients die every year. Hepatitis B and hepatitis C account for 90 per cent of deaths, while the remaining 10 per cent are caused by other hepatitis viruses.

Despite the World Hepatitis Alliance’s decision to observe World Hepatitis on May 18, the 63rd meeting of the World Health Assembly was held on May 28, 2010. Dr Baruch Blumberg decided to celebrate World Hepatitis Day on his birthday together with the day being officially celebrated. In Nepal, it has been celebrated only since July 28, 2010.
