Tokyo Olympics 2020: Nepali athletes to play from tomorrow‚ Which game when?
KATHMANDU: JULY 23 – The 32nd Summer Olympic Games, is starting in Japan from today. The Tokyo Olympics will officially kick off amid a special event in the capital, Tokyo.
Competition for some games has already started from Wednesday. The opening ceremony at the Olympic Stadium will begin at 4:45 pm Nepali time. The opening ceremony will feature a variety of events, including a player’s march pass.
11,000 athletes from around the world have arrived in Tokyo with the expectation of setting new records in the Olympics, but the covid transition has not shown much enthusiasm. There used to be a lot of fuss in the World Games. Held every four years, the Olympics add colour to the host city. This time around, the COVID-19 epidemic has taken a toll. Only a few Olympic flags, mascots and logos, which were delayed by a year due to the epidemic, can be seen at the airport.
Athletes, coaches and officials from all over the world have arrived in Japan to participate in the Olympics. A 23-member team including players from Nepal has reached Tokyo. Swimmers Gaurika Singh and Alexander Shah (Alex) will carry Nepal’s flag at the March Pass of the inaugural session of the Tokyo Olympics. National Sports Council (NSC) Member Secretary Ramesh Kumar Silwal is in the Nepali team’s Safe the Mission.

5 players from 4 games from Nepal will present the challenge. Nepal will participate in athletics, shooting, judo and swimming. Saraswati Chaudhary in Athletics, Kalpana Pariyar in Shooting, Sonia Bhatta in Judo and Gaurika Singh and Alex Shah in Swimming will present Nepal’s challenge.
Tomorrow (Saturday), the shooting team will compete in the 100-meter air rifle. She is going to participate in the Tokyo Olympics after receiving a wild card. If she passes the selection stage, the final stage game will also be played on the evening of July 24.
Tomorrow, Sonia Bhatta will compete in Judo under the 48 kg weight category. She is also going to participate in the Olympics through the wild card. The International Judo Federation has decided to allow Sonia to participate in the Olympics. If 19-year-old Sonia passes the first stage, the other stage match will also be played on the same day.
Alex Shah and Gaurika Singh from Nepal are participating in the swimming. Both athletes have reached the Olympics from the university quota. Nepali swimmer Alex will represent Nepal in the men’s 100m freestyle. He will compete in the men’s 100-meter freestyle hit stage on July 27. If Alex manages to cross the hit stage, he will play another game on July 28 and if he succeeds, he will compete in the final stage on July 29.
Similarly, Gaurika will present a challenge in women’s 100-meter freestyle. She became the youngest athlete in the previous edition of the Olympics. Gaurika will compete in the women’s 100-meter freestyle hit stage on July 28.
Saraswati Chaudhary of Nepal is competing in athletics. She is about to present Nepal’s challenge in the 100-meter race. Short distance runner Chaudhary is going to play Olympics in the university quota. She will enter the field on July 30.
Overall, Nepal has not been able to perform remarkably well in the Olympics. Nepal’s competition is limited to participation. Looking at the history of 14 games played by Nepal in the Olympics, no achievement has been achieved.
Nepal started its Olympic journey in 1964 with the 18th edition of the Games in Tokyo, Japan. So far, 85 Nepali athletes have participated in the Olympics. But none of the players have won official medals.
However, Nepal’s taekwondo players Deepak Bista and Sangina Vaidya have qualified for the Olympics. Nepal has so far been represented in eight games in the Olympics. Nepal is represented in athletics, boxing, swimming, taekwondo, weightlifting, shooting, judo and archery. Among them, participation in athletics has not been broken since the start of the Olympic journey.
Even in this Olympics, the goal of the Nepali team will be to improve their personal performance rather than a medal. Swimming, shooting and judo players have arrived in Tokyo, Japan for the Olympic Games, while the athletics team will leave for Japan on July 24.
