MUMBAI: JULY 18 – At least 15 people were killed and a few more people were feared trapped in two landslide incidents in Mumbai’s suburbs on Sunday morning following heavy rains in India’s financial capital.

According to the disaster management cell of the city’s civic authority, one of the incidents occurred in the Chembur suburb at 6:30 a.m. local time and a house wall collapsed, leading to 12 deaths. The other in the Vikhroli suburb claimed three lives.

Two injured people from the Chembur incident were treated and discharged from the hospital while five to six more people are feared trapped in the debris of a house that collapsed in the Vikhroli area, a local official said.

Heavy rainfall was recorded on Saturday night and Sunday morning in Mumbai, leading to waterlogging in parts of the city.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a micro-social blogging site said, “Saddened by the loss of lives due to wall collapses in Chembur and Vikhroli in Mumbai. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. Praying that those who are injured have a speedy recovery.”
