IMEI registration is mandatory
KATHMANDU: JULY 16 – Registration of International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) of mobiles coming into operation from today has been made mandatory. The Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) has made IMEI registration mandatory to help prevent the smuggling of mobile phones from abroad and to find lost mobile phones easily.
Authority spokesperson Santosh Poudel informed that this rule has been strictly enforced from today as it will be easier to arrest those involved in criminal activities with the control of mobile phones entering Nepal by evading revenue. He says this rule has been in place for a long time but has been tightened recently.
Now, the mobile phones bought directly from abroad will come into operation only after registering with NTA. Although this rule is not strictly applicable to the currently running mobiles, this rule will be strictly enforced in the mobiles that are in operation from today. As the mobile phones purchased in Nepal will be registered by the importing company, all the information will be with the authority and since there is no information about the mobiles brought from outside, criminal activities will take place from such mobiles and mobile registration has been made mandatory to control it. The current mobile phone will be allowed to run smoothly immediately.
IMEI is a unique identifying code. Which works to include every mobile device in the government system. To know the IMEI of your mobile, you can dial * # 06 # and register / not register at https://eir.nta.gov.np/. There is no fee to register for IMEI now.
