KATHMANDU: JULY 9 – The World Bank will provide about Rs. 12 billion (US 100 million dollars) for Nepal’s health and education sectors. The World Bank’s executive committee approved the grant on Thursday.

Nepal has received US 50 million dollars in education and the US 50 million dollars in health. This amount will be spent on government school quality improvement programs and public resource management in the health sector.

Faris H. Hadad-Zervos, Director of the World Bank’s Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Nepal, said the program was aimed at developing Nepal’s education and health sectors, especially for the economically disadvantaged and rural population.

“The program aims to help manage the impact of the epidemic on the education sector and create an environment for children to return to school,” he said.

The World Bank has allocated about Rs. 6.9 billion for the educational quality improvement program of government schools. This program will help to bring back the children who have been deprived of education due to various scholarship programs and various reasons.

The World Bank’s ‘Nepal Health Sector Strategy’ program will extend the deadline by one year and will help manage public resources in the health sector. It is also said that it will help in formulating an integrated strategic program for the health sector for the prevention, control, and treatment of the COVID-19 epidemic.

Just last week, Nepal had signed a loan agreement worth Rs 16 billion with the World Bank for the post-COVID-19 rehabilitation program. Similarly, the World Bank has already announced to spend 4 billion dollars for vaccination programs in 50 countries including Nepal.
