KATHMANDU: There has been widespread controversy over the penalty awarded to England in extra time in the semi-finals of the Euro Cup 2020 on Wednesday night. After a 1–1 draw in the scheduled 90 minutes, captain Harry Kane scored from the penalty spot in the 104th minute of extra time to give England a hard-fought victory over Denmark.

Various world media have also written about this from the comments on the social media of the European Football Association. Australian media outlet ABC has written on its website that many former players have reacted wrongly to Denmark’s decision to load Raheem Sterling on the touchline.

Former England striker Darren Bent has argued that the referee may have been influenced by Wembley’s 60,000 spectators, ABC reported. Dutch player Nigel de Jong also said the penalty was not appropriate. “If we were to be truly honest, that wouldn’t be a penalty,” he told ABC. Former German player Dietmar Hamann also said that it was not a penalty but a dyad, according to ABC.

World Media Goal.com, which writes news related to football, has also written that the penalty is controversial. Even though Harry Kane won the match by scoring a penalty, there has been a ‘storm’ of posts on social media saying that the penalty was wrong.

Australia’s prestigious newspaper, The Sydney Morning Herald, posted a video on its website saying that England had won by a controversial penalty.

Although England secured a place in the final with a 2–1 victory, The Sydney Morning Herald wrote that the way to win would make football fans around the world angry.

Whether Raheem Sterling was fouled or not by Joakim Maehle will be debated for the rest of this week and beyond as written by the British newspaper Scotsman.

However, the British newspaper Mirror has responded to Sterling. In which he says, ‘There was a clear penalty.
