Hulas Wire workers agitate against the eviction
BIRATNAGAR: JULY 7 – It has been more than 20 years since Barjulal Majhi of Gramthan Rural Municipality started working in Hulas Wire Industries. He has never had to quit his job since 2056 BS. When he was in trouble, the industry would immediately call him and put him to work. Many of those who came after him are working temporarily and some are working temporarily. But he always worked as a laborer.
The company never even thought about making him permanent. Barjulal says, ‘I always worked for a weekly wage.’ Those who work for a weekly wage are paid only the day they go to work‚ they do not get any of the services they receive when they are sick and stay at home.
Barju, who went home happy after earning his salary from last Wednesday to Tuesday, was not allowed to enter through the gate when he came to work in the industry in the morning. The guard at the gate told him not to come to work. He was surprised when he was instructed not to let the leaked information inside. While sitting there, many workers like him were not allowed to enter. The workers, who had gathered outside after being not allowed to work, did not allow anyone from the industry to enter Hulas Wire Industries.
Another worker, Feku Majhi, said that they had to agitate after seeing a notice to regular workers not to come to work. “We have not been given any information,” he said. “When we came to work, we were told not to enter. We stayed outside.” He said that the company was informed that it had been fired due to loss. Suddenly extracting information laborers are told not to come to the work all of a sudden. Another daily wage and contract worker who worked in the industry for years was fired, he said.
Workers of Hulas Wire Industries in Basbari of Budhiganga Municipality have been on strike since this morning in protest of the eviction. They have been agitating at the main gate to protest against the dismissal of the administration by the uninformed administration. After the workers’ agitation, talks are being held between the industry operators and the labor leaders.
The industry administration said that out of the five GI plants, two were in operation and all of them were employed. One of the plants was shut down and did not come into operation for a few days.
While the agitating workers are accusing 150 people of being fired at once, the industry administration has confirmed that about 86 people have been fired.
Industry Manager Mukesh Kothari said that the workers have been asked not to come to work for a few days as there is a problem in the industry now as the industry is seasonal. He said that there was no such problem but there was no such reason for the agitation.
