Captive deer in the orchard [Photos]
KATHMANDU: JULY 6 – As soon as we heard the name deer, the image of deer rejoicing in the forest immediately comes to mind. The nature of the deer is to run in the forest and pasture area.
In the Pashupatinath area of Kathmandu, the deer are not running nor jumping. The deer here are like ‘monks’. They don’t run when they see people. Instead, they come to the side. They look at people’s hands and faces to see if some food has been brought. They also eat noodles and biscuits given by people. The deer here are like ‘pets’. They are not playful, they are lazy like goats reared at home.
Because these deer are confined to a limited area. The Pashupati Area Development Fund has been raising deer in the orchard since 2061 BS. Swasthani’s story mentions the Shleshmantak forest and deer. The deer reared in the Shleshmantak forest of the Pashupatinath region is considered to be the form of Lord Shiva.
There are now about 200 deer in the orchard. Initially, 30 deer were kept in the 95 ropani areas set aside for deer rearing. Now that number has increased to about 200.
As the number of deer is increasing day by day, the deer is becoming desolate due to management problems. As the number of deer increased, the deer started eating the bark and roots of the tree inside the garden due to a lack of food. Inside the garden, deer can be seen sleeping like tired. The Pashupati Area Development Fund has stated that 22 staffs have been deployed for deer conservation. The staff has been giving flour, water, salt, gram, bran, and grass to the deer twice a day. As the number of deer is increasing, the deer are now being handed over to the National Wildlife Department.
