11 killed in mine accident in Shaanxi, China
The rescue operation has been hampered by heavy rains since Wednesday morning.
TAIYUAN: JUNE 16 – At least 11 workers have been killed in floodwaters at an iron mine in China’s northern province of Shaanxi.
According to local officials, the search and rescue operation for the other victims is still ongoing. The Daixian County Information Office said water entered a well at the iron mine around 1 a.m. Thursday. Earlier, it was estimated that 13 people were missing inside the mine.
The office also said that water was taken out from the place where the workers were trapped inside the mine. The search for three other workers suspected to be buried in the mud and soil of the mine is on.
The local rescue office said an investigation into the incident had begun.
Rescuers said a large number of fuses, detonators and explosives were found inside the tunnel during the exhumation. A team of experts disposing of explosives has also been sent to the mine. The rescue operation has been hampered by heavy rains since Wednesday morning. -XINHUA
