Seventeen killed in bus-van collision in India
LUCKNOW: JUNE 9 – A bus carrying migrant workers after the lifting of Corona Virus restrictions hit a delivery van on a highway in northern India, killing at least 17 people and injuring 18, police said Wednesday.
Another 18 people were injured in the accident, police said. After the second wave of the Corona Virus epidemic began to subside in India, returning workers have begun to return to work.
Police Officer Mohit Agrawal said that the bus overturned on the road after colliding with a van coming from the opposite direction.
The workers were on their way to Ahmedabad in western Gujarat State. The van was carrying workers from a biscuit factory. Most of the dead were workers in vans, Agrawal said.
Sixteen people died on the spot and one died at the hospital. The injured are being treated at local hospitals, according to police. Police Officer Agrawal quoted the passengers as saying that the bus driver had complained that the bus was speeding.
According to the police, more than 110,000 people are killed in road accidents in India every year. Most of the accidents are due to negligence of the driver, poor condition of the road and old vehicles. -AP
