England’s struggling victory
KATHMANDU: JUNE 7 – England, preparing for the Euro Cup, beat Romania 1-0 on Sunday night. The only goal for England was scored by Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford. Romania lost in the 68th minute when he scored the decisive goal through a penalty.
Coach Gareth Southgate continued to test players in friendly matches before the Euros. He also sent three players to the field against Romania, in addition to the 26 teams announced for the Euros. Ben Godfrey, Ben White and James Ward-Prowse were named in the 26-man squad against Romania.
Romania had good shots against England. Romania were denied a chance to score when they were hit twice. Marcus Rashford put them ahead from the penalty spot in the 68th minute after Jack Grealish, inevitably, was fouled by Tiberiu Capusa.
Rashford was given the captain’s arm band during the game. He also became the youngest player to captain England as a black player. He captained the England team for 23 years and 218 days.
England, in Group D at the Euros, will face Croatia, Scotland and the Czech Republic in the group stage.
