Many teams will now play in the Cricket World Cup, Nepal and Associates country will have benefit

KATHMANDU: JUNE 2 – The number of teams competing in the ODI and Twenty20 World Cups is set to increase. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to field 14 nations in the ODI World Cup and 20 nations in the Twenty20 World Cup.

The council announced its program from 2023 to 2031 on Tuesday, stating that 14 countries will compete in the 2027 and 31 ODI World Cups, according to international media. Currently, 10 countries are competing in the ODI World Cup.

With the new decision, it will be easier for the associate country to play in the World Cup. At the same time, if Nepal can also focus on cricket, it will be easier to realize the dream of playing ODI World Cup. As this decision is still six years away from implementation, the possibility of playing ODI World Cup is not far away if Nepal also focuses, say cricket experts.

Countries including Ireland and Zimbabwe have been performing well in the associate countries.

Similarly, 20 countries will compete in the World Cup Twenty20 from 2024. This will make it easier for countries including Nepal to play in the World Cup Twenty20. Currently, 16 countries are competing in the World Cup Twenty20. Similarly, the council is going to re-launch the Champions Trophy. The Champions Trophy has not been held since 2017.

In the ODI World Cup, 7-7 teams will be divided into two groups. The top three teams will reach the Super Sixs. From that, it will be a semi-final and a final. There will be four groups in the World Cup Twenty20. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Eights. From which the semi-final and final will be decided. The top eight teams in the ICC will play in the Champions Trophy.

Similarly, the test championship finals will be held in 2025, 2027, 2029 and 2031, according to the council. Only 16 countries will compete in this year’s Twenty20 World Cup and 10 in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.

Nepal is preparing to play in the World selection Twenty20 World Cup in 2022. Nepal, which is in Group A, has to be in the top two to make it to the World Cup. Failing to be in the top two, Nepal will get another chance to make a place in the global if they can stay in the top two by playing qualifier play-off.
