Syrian presidential election begins
SYRIA: MAY 26 – Syria’s presidential election has begun. Syrian officials say the presidential election is set to begin on Wednesday.
According to the news, voting is taking place only in certain areas due to security problems. In particular, the election process has begun only in the Syrian capital and in areas controlled by the government.
The voting process, which started on Wednesday morning, will continue till this evening. Elections have been held only in areas controlled by the Syrian government. Syria’s Interior Minister Mohammad Khaled al-Rahmoun said on Tuesday that 12,000 polling stations had been set up across the country.
He told a press conference on Tuesday that arrangements had been made for the security of the polls on Wednesday. He also informed that preparations have been made to complete the voting process in a safe manner.
Three people, including current Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, have nominated themselves for the presidency. The uprising against President Assad had erupted in Syria a few years ago.
