15 killed in Congo volcano eruption

AFRICA: MAY 24 – At least 15 people have been killed in a volcanic eruption in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mount Nyiragongo in the northern Congolese province of Kivu erupted on Saturday night.

At least 15 locals were killed in the blast, according to provincial government officials. Fifteen people were killed while trying to escape after a volcano erupted on the mountain.

Authorities in Congo say a bomb had exploded at Mount Nyiragongo and they were trying to flee the area. Nine people were killed and two others were injured in the blast. Similarly, four persons had tried to escape from the jail.

They also died in the accident, provincial officials told local media. -XINHUA
