16 killed in marathon race in China
GANSU: SUNDAY, MAY 23, 2021 – At least 16 people have died while running a 100-kilometer marathon in China.
Five of the contestants are still missing and other contestants are in contact, officials said.
The incident took place during a 100-kilometer cross-country mountain marathon held in China’s Gansu province. It is said that the contestants died due to sudden bad weather during the competition.
The incident took place at 3 am local time on Saturday at a place called Yantai in the city of Baiyin, popular as a tourist destination, officials said. Rescuers rushed to the scene after the weather suddenly changed and affected the contestants. He was the one who rescued the dead and injured.
Some of the contestants were injured in the incident and are undergoing treatment, officials said. There were 172 participants in the competition. The condition of most of them is said to be normal. -XINHUA
