‘Tauktae’ Cyclone: Kills 12 in Mumbai [Photos]

NEW DELHI: TUESDAY, MAY 18, 2021 – Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, India, has been hit by Cyclone Tauktae. There was strong wind and rain in the metropolis on Monday morning.

Twelve people have been killed and more than 1.5 million displaced by strong winds and heavy rains, according to the BBC.

Due to the strong winds, large trees fell in many places. As a result, the vehicle was damaged. The airport was closed until 6 pm on Monday due to the intensity of the cyclone.

The Indian ship P-305 sank in the sea due to the storm. According to Indian media, the exact number of passengers on board and the amount of damage has not been ascertained yet.

The cyclone has affected people’s lives in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and other areas. Many houses have collapsed and power supply has been cut off due to collapse of electricity poles.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast winds of 90 to 100 kmph in Raigad, Palghar, Mumbai, Thane and Ratnagiri districts.

Vaccination against Covid-19 has also been postponed due to the storm. The work was affected after the vaccination center was damaged.

According to Indian media, 12,420 people from the coastal areas of Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Raigad districts were evacuated.

KS Hosalikar, head of the Environmental Research and Services SID at the Indian Meteorological Department in Pune, said on Twitter that Tauktae strom moving very fast. He said the speed was 160 kmph in Mumbai and 290 kmph in Gujarat.
