188 killed in Israeli-Palestinian conflict
GAZA: MONDAY, MAY 17, 2021 – The death toll from Israeli air strikes in the Palestinian territories has risen to 188. The conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis entered its seventh day on Sunday. The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza said 55 children were among the dead.
The Times of Israel quoted the ministry as saying that another 1,230 Palestinians had been injured in the last 24 hours. The Israeli military says most of those killed in Gaza since the recent violence began are members of terrorist groups.
Israel has listed Hamas, which has been active in the Gaza Strip, as a terrorist group. The army has claimed that dozens of people were killed when a rocket fired by a Palestinian group went wrong.
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden has called for an end to the ongoing war between Israel and Palestine. In a telephone conversation with leaders of both countries on Saturday night, Biden called for an immediate end to the violence, according to the Associated Press.
Biden held private phone talks with Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas. The dialogue is believed to work to ease the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinians in the disputed West Bank and Gaza Strip.
At least 10 people have been killed in a recent Israeli rocket attack on a Palestinian refugee camp. Israel has also targeted the tower, which houses the offices of foreign media outlets in Palestine, including the AP and Al Jazeera.
The building where the media office was located was destroyed in the attack. A UN Security Council meeting has been called for Sunday at China’s request as the situation in the Middle East worsens. -ANI
