YANGON: FRIDAY, APRIL 30, 2021 – Myanmar’s military has extended a ceasefire by one month. The army said on Friday that it would not take any action until May 31.

A statement issued by the Office of the Chief of Army Staff stated that the ceasefire has been extended in view of the current special situation. The statement also said that the army would continue to carry out internal, administrative and regular activities even if it did not take action. Myanmar’s military took power on February 1 and its leaders have been detained.

There is an agitation against the army taking control of power. Hundreds have been killed and thousands injured during the protests. International bodies, including the United Nations, and many countries around the world have protested against the military’s overthrow of the democratic government.

They have also suggested and pressured Myanmar’s military to hand over power to a democratically elected government. However, the army has made it clear that it has been in power for a year, saying it will hold another election as the last election was rigged. – RSS / XINHUA
