Former police officer convicted of killing black citizen George Floyd
MINNEAPOLIS: FRIDAY, APRIL 23, 2021 – Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, has been convicted of murdering George Floyd, a black man of African-American descent.
The debate, which has been going on in the court for almost three years, has been prominently covered by all the major media outlets in the world. Floyd died after Derek arrested a black man, Floyd, and knocked him to the ground.
As soon as the Minneapolis court handed down the verdict, a large number of Floyd’s supporters gathered outside the court and exchanged cheers. Chaubhin, who was released on bail, was handcuffed and produced in court before the verdict was pronounced. Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill read out the verdict and said it was unanimous. The court jury consisted of seven women and five men.
The court sentenced Chaubin to 40 years in prison for committing a serious crime. Chauvin, who spent 19 years in the Minneapolis Police Department, made a video of Floyd being strangled in the neck for more than nine minutes, in which Floyd repeatedly said, “I can’t breathe.”
Floyd, 46, died on May 25, 2020. Floyd is accused of giving fake $20 notes to a shop. But protests erupted in the United States and other parts of the world, describing the incident as ethnic injustice and police brutality.
Prior to the ruling, security had been beefed up in US cities, citing fears of violence. -AFP
