1700 prisoners released on Ramadan
CAIRO: WEDNESDAY, APRIL 21, 2021 – Egypt released about 1,700 people from various prisons across the country on Tuesday on the eve of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. A man who was jailed but has shown improvement in their conduct has been released on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan on the directive of the President for imprisonment.
There is an international tradition of releasing prisoners who have improved their conduct while in prison and have spent two-thirds of their life in prison. In other parts of the world, as in Egypt, two-thirds of prisoners who have already paid their prison sentences on holidays and long religious and cultural holidays have been released on parole.
Egypt has for years been releasing prisoners on the eve of Ramadan and Independence Day (July 23) and releasing those who have seen improvement. According to Egypt’s constitution, the president has the power to pardon prisoners convicted of armed rebellion, terrorism, revenge killings, and drug trafficking. -Shinhwa
