Again, Kathmandu became the most polluted city in the world
KATHMANDU: THURSDAY, APRIL 15, 2021 – The amount of air pollution in Kathmandu Valley has started increasing again. A few days ago, the pollution was reduced due to rains in the hilly areas including the valley. But now the pollution is on the rise again.
At the same time, out of 50 cities in the world, Kathmandu is number one in terms of pollution. Second is Nur-Sultan of Kazakhstan, third is Beijing of China, fourth is Wuhan of China, fifth is Hanoi of Vietnam and Moscow of Russia. The general public has felt burning eyes since Wednesday due to the pollution.
According to IQAir, which is headquartered in Switzerland, AQI 227 in Kathmandu reached 10 am on Thursday. The city of Nur-Sultan in Kazakhstan, ranked second in the world, has an AQI of 167.
According to environmentalists, this is due to dust and smoke spread in the atmosphere. As AQI increases, so does the risk. Air with an AQI of up to 50 is considered healthy. According to World Health Organization (WHO) standards, AQI should be less than 35.
An AQI of 51 to 100 is considered normal. AQI above 201 is very unhealthy. Above 301 by the WHO is fatal.
