More than 1,800 prisoners escape from Nigerian jails

KATHMANDU: TUESDAY, APRIL 6, 2021 – More than 1,800 inmates have escaped from Nigerian prisons. The inmates escaped after gunmen stormed a jail in the southeastern city of Owerri.

The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of the prison’s administrative building. So far, six prisoners have returned. Thirty-five people did not escape from the jail. Police have accused the banned separatist group Indigenous People of Biafra of attacking them. But the group has denied any involvement in the attack.

A total of 1,844 prisoners have escaped from the Imo state jail.
