Maoist attack in India: 22 security personnel killed
INDIA: SUNDAY, APRIL 4, 2021 – Authorities have confirmed that at least 22 policemen were killed when Maoists ambushed a police commando unit in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh.
The incident took place in a forested area of Bijapur district on Saturday. A senior security official from Chhattisgarh, Ashok Juneja, said one jawan was still missing after the attack. The deadly attack was followed by one of the deadliest attacks in years. A search team immediately found their bodies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted after the incident and expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased. “I extend my condolences to the families of those who were martyred while fighting the Maoists in Chhattisgarh. The sacrifices of the heroic martyrs will never be forgotten. I wish the injured a speedy recovery, ”he wrote.
Home Minister Amit Shah, who is currently in Assam, is returning to Delhi on Sunday evening after receiving news of the attack, according to BBC Hindi. The Maoists, known as Naxalites, are active in Chhattisgarh. There have been major attacks in the past as well.
Speaking to the press on Sunday, the officials said that there was a four-hour gun battle between the Maoists and the security personnel. The injured were taken to hospitals in Bijapur and Raipur.
