KATHMANDU: WEDNESDAY, MARCH 24, 2021 – A seven-year-old girl has been shot dead by security forces in Myanmar.

The girl from Mandalay is the youngest person to die in the army’s crackdown on coup d’tat last month. Her family claims she was shot while she was at home. According to local media and security personnel, soldiers shot at her father but hit the girl who was sitting on his lap inside their home. She was taken to hospital for treatment after being shot, but she did not survive.

Her 19-year-old brother has been arrested by the security personnel. Demonstrations have been taking place in Myanmar since the army assassinated the government on February 1. Save the Children says 20 children have been shot dead by security forces so far. The military says 164 people have been killed so far, while the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners puts the death toll at 261.

The army has mourned the death of the protesters but accused them of bringing chaos to the country.
