AGENCY: Suluhu Hassan was sworn in as Tanzania’s first female president on Friday. After John Magufuli’s death, Hassan has become president in his place.

Hassan, 61, wore a black suit and a red headscarf and took the oath of office and secrecy in the capital, Dar es Salaam. Before taking the oath, she took part in a military parade and received a cannon salute. According to the constitution, Hassan will complete the rest of Magufuli’s second term. This period will end in 2025.

This is the second case of a woman head of state in Africa. In Ethiopia, Sahle-Work is the president, but his role is not executive.

Hassan from Zanjibar has been in politics for the past 20 years. His political journey was from the local government to the country’s parliament. Hasti Hassan of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduji party was made Magufuli’s running mate in the 2020 presidential election.
