Kathmandu. Bal Bahadur Wali of Gairapatu in Tulsipur Sub-metropolis-7 of Dang has been cultivating sugarcane for the past three years.

Wali, who has been living in Shimla, India for a long time, has been cultivating sugarcane for the past three years. He has planted sugarcane in only 2 blocks of land.

Wali also worked in sugarcane farming in Shimla, India. Having learned to cultivate sugarcane from there, he has now returned to his own village and is engaged in agriculture according to the skills he has learned abroad.

Although he used to sell sugarcane at the Mela Mahotsav last year, this time all of them were closed due to the Corona epidemic. He said that he has been selling sugarcane worth Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 daily on bicycles.

‘I move sugarcane in Tulsipur market all day. When I reach home in the evening, I have been selling Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 daily, ‘he said.

He said that in the past, all the sugarcane was sold in a couple of days during the festival, but now it is sold at Tulsipur Bazaar and school. Sugarcane is ready for sale today and if it is not sold by the end of Falgun, the salty substance in the sugarcane will increase and it will be wasted without selling.

Initially investing Rs 10,000 in farming, he has been earning more than Rs 100,000 annually. He initially cultivated vegetables. However, he said that he changed his business and started cultivating sugarcane for three years as he did not have much income.

“The use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in vegetable farming has affected human health, causing fluctuations and decay,” he said. Sugarcane is also very beneficial for patients suffering from various diseases. Since sugarcane can be harvested from 10 months of planting and sold in 6 to 8 months, the price does not go down.

He informed that the sellers of sugarcane juice in the market keep it at Rs 10 per kg but they sell it at Rs 70 to Rs 150 per kg.
