Kathmandu. Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of Myanmar’s ruling National League for Democracy (NLD), has been arrested, a party spokesman said. Suu Kyi was arrested amid rising tensions between the government and the military over allegations that the army was trying to assassinate her.

In last November’s election, the NLD won enough seats in parliament to form a government. But the military has said the election was rigged. The army is calling on the government to postpone Monday’s parliamentary session.

Others were also arrested

According to party spokesman Myo Ning, Suu Kyi, as well as President Wu Mein and other leaders, were taken away early in the morning. “I want our people to do nothing and do what the law says,” he said. He asserted that his confession had been obtained through torture.

Army presence on the streets

Troops are seen in the streets of the capital, Napida, and the main city, Yangon. According to the BBC Burma service, telephone and internet services have been shut down in the capital.

Family members said the army had raided the chief minister’s residence in several places and taken him away. The armed forces promised last Saturday that the army would abide by the constitution after concerns were raised that the army was trying to coup. – From the BBC
