Nepal to rise to developing nation after five years!
Kathmandu. Nepal is set to rise in the list of developing nations in 2026 after five years. The United Nations Committee for Development Policy (CDP) has recommended that Nepal be upgraded from a least developed country to a developing country.
Normally, a period of three years is given for preparation for upgrading, but Nepal has a period of five years. The assessment conducted by the CDP in the last three years was conducted from February 22 to 26. Mentioning that Nepal has already met the criteria in the other two criteria apart from the level of income, it has been suggested to upgrade. Nepal has qualified for the upgrade by fulfilling the last two criteria of per capita income, human resource index and economic risk index.
Following the CDP’s recommendation and the final decision accepted by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the UN General Assembly, Nepal will become a developing country. However, three years after formally rising to the list of developing countries, Nepal must meet the criteria set out in the next CDP review in 2024.
According to the policy of the United Nations, only successful countries are promoted to developing countries by the criteria set twice in a row every three years.
