Tripoli. Attempts have been made to assassinate Libya’s UN-backed government minister, Fathi Bashagha.

Home Minister Fathi was shot dead by an unidentified gunman as he was walking towards the ministry from his residence in Janjur district, west of the capital Tripoli.

According to the ministry, the attackers targeted the minister’s vehicle using machine guns. Minister Bashaga’s bodyguards fired in retaliation, killing one gunman on the spot and arresting two others.

Libya has been plagued by insecurity and instability since the fall of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
