Attacked Parliament building at their own discretion
Kathmandu. Responding to the impeachment allegations, former President Donald Trump’s lawyers said his supporters attacked the parliament building at their own discretion.
The Capital building in Washington was attacked on January 6. The impeachment hearing is set to begin on Tuesday in the upper house of the US House of Representatives, the Senate. Last month, the lower house, the House of Representatives, indicted Trump for the second time.
He is accused of inciting his supporters to violence before the riots began. Trump has said he will not testify at the impeachment hearing.
Five people, including a police officer, were killed when supporters stormed the Capital building, and lawmakers inside the building were forced to hide. Trump is the first president in US history to be impeached twice. He is also one of three indicted presidents in the United States.
Ahead of the hearing, Trump’s lawyers said in a statement that documents from the FBI showed that the plot was being hatched just days before the Jan. 6 incident.
That means Trump did not incite riots that day, they said. Trump’s lawyers have also claimed that it is unconstitutional to try him. Lawyers argue that he is no longer in office and has become a civilian.
He called the impeachment process a “political gimmick” by Democrats and a “shameless political act.” They allege that the purpose of the hearing is to silence the opposition and the minority party. BBC
