Naming of seven lakes on World Wetlands Day
Siddharthnagar. On the occasion of World Wetlands Day, seven lakes in Lumbini area, the birthplace of Buddha, have been named. The lakes are named after senior nature conservationists, said Bhikhchu Metteya, vice-chairman of the development fund.
Elaborating on the relationship between water, wetland and life, he said that seven wetlands have been named in the memory of scholars in the field of nature conservation. According to him, the names of late naturalists Harka Gurung, Dr.Chandra Gurung, Dr.Mingma Narbu Sherpa, Harisharan Nepali Kaji, Dr.Tirthaman Maskey, Dr.George Archibald and Dr.Ghan Gurung have been announced.
Dr.Ghanshyam Gurung is currently the director of the World Wildlife Fund Nepal, while Harka, Chandra, Tirtha, Narbu, Harisharan and George Archibald died in a helicopter crash in Taplejung 14 years ago.
On the occasion, Lumbini Minister for Industry, Tourism, Forest and Environment Leela Giri said that the state government would move ahead with a clear plan for nature conservation. He said that Lumbini is working in a planned manner for nature conservation and biodiversity.
On the occasion, Vice-Chancellor of Lumbini Buddhist University Prof Dr.Hridayaratna Bajracharya said that the university was ready to cooperate for the conservation of storks related to Buddhist philosophy and promotion of wetland. Dr.Ghanshyam Gurung, Nepal Director of the World Wildlife Fund, said that it was important to name the wetland in honor of the pioneers for wetland and nature conservation. Rasas
