The terai region lies in the southern part of the country. It is situated at about 60 to 300m from the sea level. It has a hot climate. During summer, its temperature goes upto 40 degree Celsius. Its receives rainfall during June-September. Many people lives in this region due to plain land and fertile soil. The eastern part of the terai receives more rainfall than the western part. So, it is affected by floods during the rainy seasons. Terai has hot climate. So, the people wear light cotton clothes.

People of this region speaks Tharu, Maithali, Bhojpuri, etc. The mithila groups of terai are popular for their authentic traditional arts and paintings. The houses are made of mud & clay and have thatched roofs supported by bamboo or wooden poles.

People celebrate Chhat, Holi, Maghi, Siruwa, ID etc. A large number of people of mountain and hill region are found in this region. Due to the better opportunity for the people. Some important places in this region are Biratnagar, Janakpur, Birgunj, Lumbini, Nepalgunj.

The people also rare cattle which provide them with milk, cheese, ghee, eggs and meat. Among the fruits mango is quite popular in this region.

People of this region suffered from Malaria, Small-Pox and other dangerous disease. But now many such disease have already been eradicated. So, the terai region has become one of the most pleasant places to live in.

Many primary and secondary schools have been established in every parts of this region. There are higher secondary schools and campuses in town areas. The main centres of learning are Bhadrapur, Biratnagar, Birgunj, Rajbiraj, Dhangadi, Janakpur, Bhairahawa, etc.

There are some big business centres in the terai region. They are Bhadrapur, Itahari, Dhulabari, Birtamod, Biratnagar, Mahendranagar, Butwal, etc. Many of these towns are located at the border of the country with India. So, Nepalese goods are exported and Indian goods imported through these towns. The people of this region are progressive in trade and business.  The main occupation of this region is Agriculture.
