KATHMANDU: A total of 165 youth members of parliament (MPs) from across the country have taken their oath during a ceremony organized by the National Youth Parliament.
On Thursday, the newly elected youth MPs representing various constituencies were administered the oath of office and secrecy by Diwakar Aryal, Chairperson of the Global Youth Parliament.
At the event, Chief Guest Kulman Ghising emphasized that the country’s prosperity depends not only on electricity but also on progress in health, education, infrastructure, and agriculture.
Former President of Nepal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Bhawani Rana, urged the youth MPs to focus on nation-building rather than seeking positions of power. She stressed the importance of active engagement for the country’s development.
Captain Bijay Lama highlighted that no position or uniform can be counterfeit, and when those in power act falsely, it causes suffering to the nation and its people.
During the program, certificates and badges were distributed to the newly elected youth MPs by Divakar Aryal, selection committee member Buddhi Sagar Marasini, and journalist Rajan Kuinkel.
In the second session, former Ambassador Maheshraj Dahal and advocate Ramhari Nepal provided training on the law-making process and parliamentary procedures.
The event was also attended by notable figures including Nigma Humagai, Chairperson of Citizen Group; Dinesh Khanal, an expert on Nepal-China relations; social activist Bishnuhari Dahal; and youth activistBVijay Kandel.
The youth MPs were selected through an open online application process from all 165 constituencies.
Over 7,000 applications were received, and based on applicants’ academic qualifications, social contributions, and work experience, three finalists per constituency were shortlisted. One youth MP from each constituency was then elected through an online voting held on Asar 15.
The selection committee comprised former Ambassador Maheshraj Dahal, Menuika Thapa (Chairperson of Defense Nepal), journalist Buddhi Sagar Marasini, advocate Raman Karna, social worker Bindhu Pariyar Thapa, economist Nawaraj Aryal, and Kailash Shrestha, Vice-Chairperson of the Global Youth Parliament.
