KATHMANDU: Traffic police in the Kathmandu Valley have taken action against 13,090 motorists within a week, from May 12 to the present, collecting over Rs 11.8 million in fines, according to the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office.

Authorities said the drive was launched in response to rising traffic congestion, illegal parking, reckless driving, and increasing disregard for traffic rules, all of which have been contributing to a higher risk of road accidents in Kathmandu.

According to Police Spokesperson and Superintendent of Police Nareshraj Subedi, among those penalized were 629 drivers caught driving under the influence of alcohol, while 1,036 individuals violated ride-sharing regulations.

Other violations included 1,282 cases of red-light jumping, 778 cases of speeding, 540 cases of lane discipline violations, 640 cases of sidewalk encroachment, 1,646 cases of horn violations in “no-horn” zones, and 762 cases of one-way driving violations.

He said the primary goal of enforcement is not revenue collection but ensuring public safety and reducing road accidents. The police have intensified monitoring and special campaigns targeting drunk driving, speeding, mobile phone use while driving, and signal violations.
